How Long Will Your Manicure Last?
Maintaining tidy nails can make an instant impression, but it’s essential to remember their lifespan as an investment. Regular polish may only last up to 3 weeks while gel or shellac can last even longer.
Wear gloves while performing household tasks to shield your hands from water and harsh chemicals, and use cuticle oil each night to nourish nails and avoid brittleness.
Acrylics
Acrylic nails are comprised of liquid and powder polymers that adhere to natural nails to increase length, strength, and thickness. Acrylics should typically be filled or touched up every two to three weeks for proper maintenance, including application of nail oil as needed.
Kayla Sherrille, a nail technician at the Spa at Fairmont Monte Carlo in Monaco, suggests that acrylic nails may last between four and five weeks depending on their frequency and strength of usage. Additionally, she advises applying cuticle oil between manicure sessions in order to keep both nails and cuticles moist to maintain flexibility and prevent chips or peeling of manicured fingers and cuticles.
Sherrille recommends not only using cuticle oil but also taking measures such as avoiding prolonged exposure to water and chemicals, wearing gloves while cleaning or pot washing, not picking at nails and taking frequent breaks so as to allow your nails time to repair themselves between trips to a nail salon.
Gel
Carefully maintained gel manicures can last up to two weeks with proper care. For maximum longevity it’s essential to follow some simple guidelines – like keeping nails clean and dry to prevent fungus or damage as well as using cuticle oil or moisturizer daily; both of which will hydrate nails while also protecting them against brittleness or splitting that could otherwise compromise their manicure.
Avoid soaking your nails to preserve any remaining polish. Furthermore, when participating in strenuous activities with your hands or visiting beaches (salt water and sand can wear away at your polish), wear protective gloves.
Keep a mini nail file and top coat handy in your bag to easily touch up touchups when necessary, and remember that if you do decide to peel off a gel manicure prematurely it may take six months or longer for them to return to their healthy state.
Shellac
Shellac nail polish is an increasingly popular choice because of its long-wearing nature, yet easy removal process when time comes. Simply follow these guidelines when taking off your polish.
Though it can be tempting to leave the salon immediately after having your nails done, it is crucial that they fully dry first in order for the polish not to chip and peel over time. If not allowed enough time for drying, any mistakes in application could lead to cracking of your new manicure!
As another way of prolonging your manicure, rubber gloves can protect your nails from chemicals which could deteriorate the polish. They’ll shield them from being in direct contact with water while giving you peace of mind that they’ll prevent anything breaking down their polish prematurely.
Moisturizing nails and cuticles is also key for creating an extended Shellac manicure. Incorporating cuticle oil or high-quality hand cream into your daily routine or drinking several glasses of water each day will keep them moisturized, prolonging polish-on time.
Regular Nail Polish
Traditional nail polish provides maximum versatility and convenience for those seeking effortless manicures. Application is much simpler than gel, while removal is quicker compared to gel which must be filed off before soaking off with acetone.
Start off right to ensure a fresh, healthy look is to apply a high quality base coat from any beauty supply store. A grippy base will extend nail polish‘s wear time while protecting it from peeling, chipping, and cracking – nail tech Gernstein recommends Orly Bonder as a strong primer that keeps nails in top condition for longer.
Once your color has dried, make sure to reapply top coat every two to three days to help it last and give your nails that just-out-of-the-salon look. Also remember to moisturize your nails regularly; overly dry nails tend to chip more often and peel than their counterparts that have sufficient moisture levels.
