What Are the Benefits of Gel Nails?
Gel nails feature a high-gloss finish that looks natural and elegant, as well as reduced maintenance needs and greater flexibility than acrylic nails.
Though UV lamps used for gel manicure may cause some damage, experts believe it to be minimal if done properly and with regular breaks between appointments (alternating between polish and natural nails). To keep your nail health intact in between salon visits, apply cuticle oil as necessary.
1. Long-lasting
Gel is made up of strong polymers such as polymethyl methacrylate that are hardened under UV or LED lighting to harden. This material is the same one used to produce dental implants and Plexiglass panels – so you know it will stand the test of time!
Experts advise maintaining healthy nails between appointments in order to extend the longevity of a gel manicure, experts advise keeping natural nails hydrated with cuticle oil daily and avoiding hot water or harsh cleaning product chemicals (wear gloves!) that could damage them; additionally, applying cuticle oil daily will keep cuticles hydrated, which reduces brittleness and makes the polish last longer.
Always apply a quality topcoat as it serves as an extra protective layer, shielding against chips and stains for up to 14 days! Though this step might add time, it’s well worth the investment!
2. Easy to apply
Now available are at-home gel polish kits which claim to provide similar chip-resistant and long-term results as salon manicures without UV curing – yet these kits typically only include polish and top coat; no base or builder gel. Builder gel (BIAB) adds a durable overlay onto natural nails and nail tips to strengthen, repair, lengthen, and ultimately lengthen over time.
Gel nail color can last up to three weeks and is easy to take off. First, nails must be filed to break open the topcoat seal before wrapping in tin foil and submerging in pure acetone for 10-15 minutes before being gently scraped away with a metal scraper by your manicurist using cuticle oil as moisturizer.
3. Easy to remove
Gel nails offer many advantages over acrylics for nail enhancements. They look more natural and require less shaping. Furthermore, they’re easier to care for; lasting up to three weeks depending on how well you maintain them and can even help prevent dryness! For optimal results use cuticle oil daily on them and hand cream as preventive measures against dryness.
Gel and dipping powder nail enhancements can damage natural nails if they’re applied and removed incorrectly. To minimize risk, it’s wise to visit a salon that uses sterilized tools and applies one coat of gel at a time; additionally, regular breaks between gel manicures are wise as they tend to leave behind dry, brittle nails behind.
4. Water-resistant
Gel nails are water-resistant, meaning that if your fingers become wet they won’t crack or peel from submersion.
Acrylic nails appear thicker and seem artificial, while natural nails often seem more natural. Unfortunately, acrylic requires frequent sculpting sessions as well as stronger chemicals which could ultimately wear down their appearance over time.
Dipping powder nails offer similar benefits to gel nails without needing UV light to cure, however contamination from multiple users dipping multiple hands into one pot of polish can increase risks significantly.
As with acrylic nails, both gel and acrylic require regular upkeep for optimal appearance, but with non toxic gel manicures your manicure could last for three weeks with proper cuticle care and protecting it from too much sun exposure.
5. Natural-looking
Gel nails can look natural when done right; it all depends on color selection and application techniques. “To apply gel nails properly, application begins with a clear base coat followed by multiple thin coats of polish cured between each application,” Syreeta Aaron advises. To seal in shine for added radiance add topcoat – this will complete your manicure!
She suggests going for a more subdued version of classic French tips that is lighter in tone or shimmery for an added ethereal effect. “I really love this blush and pearlescent shade – it’s simple yet elevated!” says she.
Experts advise taking regular breaks for both natural and gel nails to allow their natural state to breathe and apply cuticle oil after your manicure for best results (acetone-based nail polish remover can dry the skin too much).
